This brief discusses the quality rating and improvement system launched in Massachusetts in January 2011. The four-level rating system addresses five categories of standards: (1) curriculum and learning; (2) safe, healthy indoor and outdoor environments; (3) workforce and professional development; (4) family and community engagement; and (5) leadership, management and administration. Next steps address long-term funding, public access to ratings, and communication with lawmakers regarding program and policy needs.
