This student assessment report provides the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the 11 school divisions participating in the Virginia Preschool Initiative Plus (VPI+) program with information on children's development in Year 2. Specifically, the report documents the kindergarten entry outcomes in fall 2016 for those children who participated in VPI+ during the 2015-16 school year (also referred to as VPI+ Cohort 1). We then report the assessment results for Cohort 2 children who just started their VPI+ preschool participation in fall 2016 (referred to as VPI+ Cohort 2). Fall 2016 preschool and kindergarten assessments were collected in late September through early November. Data collected in fall 2016 for the VPI+ Cohort 1 participants can be used to understand what skills and abilities children have at kindergarten entry, after having participated in the VPI+ program, and what percentage of children are ready for kindergarten for the purpose of reporting, as required for the Preschool Development Grant Annual Progress Report. Data collected in fall 2016 for the VPI+ Cohort 2 preschool participants can be used to better understand what skills and abilities children have at the beginning of the VPI+ program and also can be used to inform instruction and programming in the second half of the school year.
