Child care is essential and needs supports to survive

This brief is the NAEYC's 10 initial recommendations for adjusting child care services and funding policies in response to the 2020 outbreak of the coronavirus COVID-19. It recommends actions with regards to the decisions to open or close ECE settings in concert with local school districts, the necessity of maintaining ECE services to support the families of essential services workers, the provision of hazard pay, unemployment, and financial support for closed child care businesses, waiving of copays, the maintenance of licensing standards, the use of resource and referral systems to provide families with knowledge of child care options, and the inclusion of child care providers on advisory groups for emergency management agencies. This brief also outlines the results of a survey of child care providers to collect initial reactions of the financial impact of virus-related closures on their businesses.
