Farm to school activities in out-of-school time: Best practices and recommendations for afterschool programs

Description:
In early 2013, CANFIT and the National Farm to School Network (NFSN) began exploring potential links between NFSN and OST programs. NFSN conducted an informal scan and survey of NFSN State Leads to assess the scope of farm to school activities in the Out-of-School Time (OST), especially in afterschool programs. Seventeen states responded confirming the existence of farm to school activities in afterschool settings. As follow up, six states were selected to participate in one-hour interviews conducted by CANFIT to dig deeper into understanding this program area. The purpose of these interviews was to: 1. Find links between farm to school activities and afterschool programs. 2. Understand best practices and innovations about farm to school activities happening in afterschool settings in these six states, so that they can be shared widely. Interview questions asked about current farm to school activities and those in afterschool settings, future plans for expansion into afterschool, successes, challenges, goals, and any other recommended reading or connections. Please see the end of this report for a list of the interview questions. Interviews were conducted in September and October 2013 with a convenience sample of NFSN State leads from California, Georgia, Iowa, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Washington. This report is meant to inform and guide future farm to school activities structured in the OST space, particularly in afterschool and Summer Meal programs and to be shared with practitioners and others committed to building healthier food environments for children in and out of school.
