The first scale enumerates perceived losses and asks respondents how frequently these losses came to mind. Items for the scale were selected on the basis of the number of times we heard them mentioned in our discussions with the people. Any item included in the scale was mentioned on at least two occasions (e.g., relocation). Most were endorsed by everyone we spoke with (e.g., loss of land, loss of language, loss of culture). Finally, the elders approved of all of the scale items as appropriate. The purpose of the scale is to assess the prevalence and immediacy of thoughts pertaining to historical loss. (author abstract)
