High-quality early learning settings depend on a high-quality workforce: Low compensation undermines quality

Description:
This document describes the findings of the National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE) on the topic of the compensation of the early childhood workforce, both nationally and in individual states. Nationally, it reveals the median hourly wages of the workforce by type of care (center-based, home-based-listed and home-based-unlisted), educational attainment, and source of funding (school-sponsored, Head Start funded, public pre-K funded, and other). It compares the hourly wages, broken down into quartiles, of staff working with 0-3 and 3-5 year-old children. It identifies states in which a staff member earning the median salary qualifies for public assistance. It then includes 52 one-page fact sheets for each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, each of which presents the median earnings of child care, preschool, Head Start, kindergarten, special education preschool, and elementary school teachers. For comparison purposes, each state's fact sheet also presents the median wages of parking lot attendants, manicurists/pedicurists, word processors/typists, and nurses.
