The Study of Nutrition and Activity in Child Care Settings (SNACS) is the first national study of CACFP associated meals and snacks served to children at all CACFP child care programs, including family child care homes, since the 1997 Early Childhood and Child Care Study. The USDA recognized the need for a rigorous study to establish a baseline snapshot of meals and snacks served in CACFP-participating programs before changes to the CACFP guidelines in October 2017. Therefore, they commissioned SNACS to assess how CACFP meals and snacks are served, hereafter referred to collectively as “meals,” aligned with existing CACFP meal pattern requirements, and to understand the types of foods served. The Study of Nutrition and Activity in Child Care Settings aimed to (1) assess the percentage of meals served at CACFP-participating programs that included the required meal pattern components (not full meal pattern compliance); (2) examine differences between meal pattern components and foods served in ECE program types; and (3) describe foods served most frequently in CACFP meals.
