Alternate Healthy Eating Index

Description:

The AHEI incorporates several aspects of the original HEI, and therefore some components correspond to existing dietary guidelines (eg, to increase fruit and vegetable intakes). The AHEI also provides quantitative scoring for qualitative dietary guidance (eg, choose more fish, poultry, and whole grains, and if you drink alcohol, do so in moderation). AHEI variables were chosen and scoring decisions were made a priori, on the basis of discussions with nutrition researchers. We sought to capture specific dietary patterns and eating behaviors that have been associated consistently with lower risk for chronic disease in clinical and epidemiologic investigations.
