Challenges in the innovation of mathematics education for young children

Description:
A commentary on the articles within a special issue of the journal Education Studies in Mathematics. This commentary addresses studies of the influence of factors from both the fields of psychology and mathematics education in children's mathematical development. The articles outline select findings of the studies of a single German research center. Issues addressed include the notion of mathematical task/situation, mathematical theories of learning and development, gender differences in achievement, and the role of teacher characteristics and training in the early years of mathematical education.
